Damage Control Firefighting Drill Aboard USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80), World War II
Sailors aboard the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) conduct a shipboard firefighting drill, manning hose lines and foam suppression equipment near the ship's CO2 fire-suppression station. Damage control readiness was critical for "jeep carriers" like Petrof Bay, whose thin-skinned hulls and full flight decks made fire one of the deadliest threats they faced during World War II Pacific operations.
