Flight deck crew aboard the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) work to clear the wreckage of a crashed aircraft from the deck's edge during World War II. Deck crashes were an ever-present hazard of carrier operations, and rapid salvage was essential to keep the flight deck clear for continued launches and landings.
