Wedged into a turret barely large enough to move in, this gunner aboard an aircraft from USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) manned one of the most physically demanding and dangerous stations on a WWII carrier aircraft. Turret gunners defended their aircraft from enemy fighters during strikes and patrols, working in cramped, exposed positions that offered little protection beyond thin plexiglass and their own skill.
