USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) Underway, Smoke Billowing from Flight Deck, Leyte Gulf Campaign, October 1944
USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80), a Casablanca-class escort carrier, is shown here underway with heavy smoke billowing from her flight deck -- likely the result of the kamikaze strike she sustained on 26 October 1944 off Leyte, Philippines, while serving with Rear Admiral Felix Stump's Taffy 2 task unit during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Despite the damage visible here, Petrof Bay remained in service, continuing to support Allied operations through the end of the war. Project: 218455
