U.S. Navy Sailors at a Below-Decks Steering/Control Station, USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80), WWII
Two crewmen of the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) are photographed at a below-decks control station during World War II. One sailor mans a manual steering or emergency control wheel while his shipmate relays orders via sound-powered telephone, a vital communication link used throughout the ship when electrical systems were compromised. Images like this documented the many unseen roles that kept a carrier's crew coordinated during combat operations in the Pacific. Project: 218453
