This photograph shows a fortified dugout built into a pine-covered hillside near Camp John Hay, the U.S. Army's mountain rest station in Baguio, Luzon. Seized by Japanese forces in December 1941, Camp John Hay and the surrounding highlands became a fiercely defended stronghold during the 1945 campaign to liberate northern Luzon. Structures like this earth-covered bunker were built by Japanese defenders to withstand the region's rugged, forested terrain, and were frequently documented by advancing American and Filipino troops.
