Pine-covered ridges roll toward the horizon in the Cordillera highlands of northern Luzon, a landscape more reminiscent of a temperate forest than the tropical lowlands typically associated with the Philippines. This rugged mountain terrain became the final battleground of the Luzon Campaign in 1945, as American and Filipino forces pursued the retreating Japanese Fourteenth Area Army into the highlands near Baguio.
