This photograph documents the rebuilding of civilian life on Luzon in the wake of World War II. Modest storefronts -- a general store, grocery, drugstore, dental office, and law practice -- line an unpaved street backed by the pine-forested hills characteristic of the Baguio highlands. Constructed largely from salvaged materials, these buildings reflect the resourcefulness of Filipino communities rebuilding commerce after the devastation of Japanese occupation and the 1945 liberation campaign.
