Sailors of the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) perform mass calisthenics on the flight deck, flanked by a row of parked fighter aircraft, during World War II Pacific operations. Daily physical training was a routine part of shipboard life, keeping crews fit for the demanding and often dangerous work of flight deck operations. The aircraft visible are believed to be FM-2 Wildcat fighters, the mainstay of composite squadrons assigned to escort carriers, which provided close air support, anti-submarine patrol, and combat air patrol throughout the Pacific campaign.
