This photograph, taken from the shoreline of Bikini Atoll, shows the towering cloud produced by a U.S. nuclear weapons test detonated over the lagoon's target fleet. Conducted as part of the Pacific Proving Grounds testing program, these detonations were designed to study the effects of atomic weapons on naval vessels and remain among the most iconic images of the early nuclear age.
