Victims' Remains Beside Rail Car at Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Germany, April 1945

This photograph, taken at Buchenwald concentration camp in April 1945 following its liberation by American forces, documents the remains of victims found near the camp's rail siding. Images such as this were captured deliberately by liberating soldiers and official military photographers to create an irrefutable visual record of the atrocities committed under the Nazi regime. They remain among the most important primary evidence of the Holocaust, and are presented here in that historical and commemorative spirit. Project: 218414
