"Mother Ship and Destroyers" - Destroyer Tender with Flush-Deck Destroyer Nest, 1930s
A U.S. Navy destroyer tender, or "mother ship," moors alongside a nest of five flush-deck destroyers (hull numbers 320-325) in this 1930s photograph from the USS Maryland photo album. Destroyer tenders provided fuel, ammunition, repairs, and crew support to squadrons of these World War I-era "four-stacker" destroyers during the interwar period. Project: 218412
