Stereoview Cards: Central Pacific Railroad Bridge and Passenger Depot, Sacramento, California

Two Central Pacific Railroad stereoview cards depict Sacramento, California in the late nineteenth century: an iron truss swing bridge (No. 235) and the city's ornate passenger depot (No. 241). Stereographs like these, viewed through a handheld stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect, were a popular form of visual entertainment and documentation in the decades following the completion of the transcontinental railroad, capturing the rapid growth of California's rail infrastructure.
