Road Construction/Quarry Labor Gang, China-Burma-India Theater, WWII

This photograph documents road construction or maintenance labor in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. Large labor gangs, often composed of local civilian workers, were essential to building and sustaining the overland supply routes — such as the Burma Road and Ledo Road — that connected Allied forces in India to China after the loss of coastal supply lines to Japanese forces. Scenes like this illustrate the immense manual effort behind the logistics of the CBI campaign. Project: 218375
