American Servicemen Walking Past Ancient Burial Mounds ("Pyramids in China"), China-Burma-India Theater, WWII

Three American servicemen stroll past the ancient, pyramid-like burial mounds of central China, a landscape feature that fascinated U.S. airmen stationed in the China-Burma-India Theater during World War II. Serving far from the Pacific's island battles, personnel with the Fourteenth Air Force and allied units based in China often explored the surrounding countryside, encountering the massive earthen tombs of the Han and Tang dynasties near Xi'an -- structures so striking in form that servicemen dubbed them 'China's pyramids.' This snapshot, hand-captioned by its original owner, reflects the personal, exploratory side of wartime service in the CBI Theater. Project: 218374
