USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) — Bow View in Dry Dock
This striking low-angle photograph, inscribed "F.D.R. IN DOCK," shows the massive overhanging bow of USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) while resting in a dry dock. Commissioned in October 1945, the Franklin D. Roosevelt was one of the U.S. Navy's new Midway-class fleet carriers, distinguished by a flight deck that extended well beyond the hull for greater aircraft-handling capacity. Dwarfed shipyard workers and scaffolding below illustrate the enormous scale of these post-war capital ships. Project: 218371
