This weathered photograph shows a dirigible in flight over the English countryside, captured from the ground by an onlooker. The image is drawn from a collection linked to Scott Field, Illinois - the U.S. Army's premier lighter-than-air training center - and its pairing with England points strongly to the airship R38 (U.S. Navy designation ZR-2), which broke apart and caught fire over the Humber Estuary near Hull on 24 August 1921. Of the 49 men aboard during that test flight, 44 died, including 16 Americans training with the U.S. lighter-than-air program. This frame appears to predate the disaster itself, offering a rare glimpse of the airship still intact in the moments before tragedy. Project: 218364
