Album Page: Atomic Bomb Devastation, Nagasaki, Japan, 1945 (Eight Photographs)
These eight photographs, mounted on a single album page, document the near-total devastation of a Japanese industrial city -- almost certainly Nagasaki -- in the aftermath of the atomic bombing of 9 August 1945. Flattened hillsides, gutted masonry buildings, and twisted industrial steelwork stretch to the surrounding mountains, while a lone civilian and a group of occupation personnel appear amid the ruins. Taken by an American serviceman during the postwar occupation, these images stand among the relatively rare firsthand photographic records of the atomic bombings' aftermath, illustrating the unprecedented scale of destruction that helped bring World War II to its close.
