On April 28, 1973, a Southern Pacific freight car loaded with bombs bound for the Vietnam War caught fire in the Roseville, California rail yard, triggering a massive chain reaction of explosions that destroyed dozens of rail cars and damaged surrounding structures. Though the blast forced the evacuation of thousands, no fatalities resulted, and this photograph captures the extent of the destruction left behind. Project: 218336
