Rows of Surplus Single-Engine Aircraft Stored on a Harbor Pier, Post-War Japan

This harbor photograph, from a post-war Japan photo album dated to the late 1940s or early 1950s, documents the disposal of surplus American military aircraft. Following the end of the Pacific War, thousands of carrier- and land-based aircraft were rendered obsolete almost overnight. Many were flown to coastal storage depots, stripped of usable parts, and scrapped — a process visible here in the long rows of single-engine aircraft lined up along this pier awaiting their fate.
