The Snapshots in Time Collection
Verso of Photograph with Handwritten Names — 5th Marine Division, Iwo Jima Collection
The reverse of this small wartime snapshot bears the handwritten surnames of three Marines — believed to read Forsyth, Heller, and Greene — inscribed by the photograph's original owner to identify comrades pictured on the front. Such handwritten notations, common on personal photographs carried by servicemen of the 5th Marine Division during the 1945 Iwo Jima campaign, offer valuable clues for identifying individuals and units represented in unlabeled wartime photo collections.
