Naval Aviator at Forward Pacific Airfield Tent Camp, WWII
A U.S. naval aviator poses in flight gear at a forward tent-camp airfield somewhere in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His flight helmet, life-vest harness, and sidearm reflect the standard equipment of carrier- and land-based Navy pilots, while the perforated steel matting beneath him -- Marston mat -- was the standard quick-build surface for airstrips carved out of coral sand on newly captured islands.
