This aerial photograph, taken from an aircraft window over Greenland's rugged Arctic terrain, is part of a personal 35mm slide collection documenting service at Thule Air Base in the early 1950s. Established in 1951, Thule became a cornerstone of U.S. Strategic Air Command's Cold War defense network, its remote location chosen for its strategic position along the polar approach routes between the Soviet Union and North America.
