Group Portrait of Japanese Army Soldiers at a Forward Position in China, Later Annotated as a Memorial Photograph, WWII Era
This group photograph of Japanese soldiers at a fortified forward position in China takes on added poignancy elsewhere in this archive, where it is annotated to identify one man, Army Infantry Sergeant Yonekura Toshiro, photographed shortly before he was killed in action during the 'Third Period Pacification Battle' of 1939. The image, ordinary in itself, was transformed by his commanding officer into a treasured keepsake for the soldier's grieving family. Project: 218280
