This photograph shows a fortified mud-brick watchtower perched atop a steep loess cliff in North China, with Japanese soldiers and equipment gathered at its base. Such towers, originally built by local Chinese communities or warlord forces for defense against banditry, were often occupied or repurposed by occupying Japanese forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War as observation posts overlooking strategic valleys and farmland.
