Procession Honoring Fallen Imperial Japanese Army Soldiers with Named Memorial Banners, Japan, Wartime Period
This photograph documents a wartime Japanese procession honoring fallen soldiers, with mourners carrying banners inscribed with the names and ranks of the dead. Known as processions for the 'eirei,' or spirits of the war dead, such ceremonies were a common and deeply symbolic feature of Japanese civic life during World War II, publicly commemorating soldiers killed in action as they were formally welcomed home.
