A-20 Havoc Attack Bomber in Flight, Fifth Air Force, Southwest Pacific Theater

A Douglas A-20 Havoc of the Fifth Air Force banks over open water in the Southwest Pacific. The 312th Bomb Group flew the A-20 in low-level strafing and skip-bombing attacks against Japanese airfields and shipping throughout the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns. Fast, maneuverable, and heavily armed with forward-firing machine guns, the Havoc was prized for its ability to deliver devastating firepower directly onto enemy targets at treetop height.
