This formation photograph shows Douglas A-20 Havoc attack bombers of the 312th Bombardment Group, a Fifth Air Force unit that flew low-level strike missions against Japanese shipping, airfields, and ground positions in New Guinea and the Philippines. Flying in tight, mutually-supporting formations like the one pictured here, A-20 crews carried out some of the most hazardous close-support and interdiction missions of the Pacific War, skimming just above treetop or wave height to deliver their ordnance with precision.
