Gallery: LETTER 14

Letter No. 14, written August 21, 1918, finds Pvt. Willis W. Wagener of the 30th Engineers sheltering from German shellfire in a converted wine-cellar dugout he calls a cave dweller's home. He describes a town's civilians evacuating, moonlit nights ideal for enemy air raids, the need to stay hidden from observation balloons, and his recovery from dysentery — with one passage naming a wounded comrade cut away.
