Destroyed Bridge Span Collapsed into Flooded River with Salvage Cranes, Western European Theater, WWII
Combat engineers and salvage crews work a collapsed bridge span dropped into a flood-swollen river somewhere in Western Europe during World War II. Bridges were prime demolition targets for retreating German forces, and rebuilding or bypassing them quickly was essential to keeping supplies and reinforcements moving to front-line divisions, including airborne units such as the 101st fighting their way across France, Belgium, and into Germany.
