Letter No. 19, written September 21, 1918 from a French YMCA hut by Pvt. Willis W. Wagener of the 1st Gas Regiment, describing troop trains in the famed "40 Hommes, 8 Chevaux" boxcars. He recounts an overnight march under full pack, distant artillery and night flares along the front, and the constant expectation of sudden orders to move.
