This front page of the Chicago Herald American, dated December 29, 1952, reports the crash of a U.S. Navy Martin PBM-5 Mariner patrol bomber of Patrol Squadron VP-47 into the Sea of Japan on December 26, 1952, during a night mission supporting Task Force 77 in the Korean War. Ten of the fourteen crewmen were lost; four survived by diving into the sea and were rescued by a Navy destroyer. Among the missing was Lt.(jg) William Eugene Bancroft, USNR, whose loss connects this newspaper to a personal wartime collection documenting his Navy service. Project: 218240
