Airfield Perimeter View, Ie Shima, 345th Bombardment Group, 1945

Ie Shima, a small island off the coast of Okinawa, was captured by US forces in April 1945 and rapidly converted into an airbase for the 345th Bombardment Group, whose B-25 Mitchell bombers flew missions against Japan and remaining Japanese positions in the region. This faded snapshot, though difficult to read in detail, preserves a fragment of the austere, hastily built airfields that supported the final air offensive of the Pacific War. Project: 218232
