American Soldier and Civilian Women Walking Through Camp Row, World War I
This World War I-era photograph, part of a collection linked to Scott Field, Illinois and American service in France, shows a soldier in field uniform and campaign hat walking alongside two civilian women through a row of temporary wooden camp buildings. Scenes like this were common at American training installations and rear-area camps overseas, where servicemen interacted with Red Cross and civilian volunteers amid the hastily built cantonments that housed the rapidly expanding American Expeditionary Forces during 1917–1918.
