This engraved commission, issued May 5, 1898, appointed C. L. Stone as Second Lieutenant in the 13th Regiment of Minnesota Volunteer Infantry at the start of the Spanish-American War. Signed by Governor David M. Clough, it reflects the swift state-level mobilization that followed the U.S. declaration of war on Spain.
