North American TF-86 "Transonic Trainer" Two-Seat Sabre, USAF s/n 31228 (FU-228)

This rare photograph shows the North American TF-86 "Transonic Trainer," one of a small number of two-seat Sabres modified to evaluate jet training at transonic speeds during the early Cold War. Built on the airframe of the famed F-86, the TF-86 placed instructor and student in tandem cockpits beneath a shared canopy, allowing pilots to experience near-sound-barrier flight under supervision. This aircraft, USAF serial 31228, reflects the Air Force's transition toward dedicated jet training as piston-engine trainers gave way to the jet age. Project: 218217
