Grumman F9F Carrier Jet Fighter '209' Recovering Aboard Aircraft Carrier
Captured from above, this photograph shows a Grumman F9F-series carrier jet fighter snagging an arresting wire moments after touching down on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier's flight deck. Aircraft like this one -- swept-winged, jet-powered, and equipped with wingtip fuel tanks for extended range -- represented the Navy's transition into the jet age during the Korean War and the years that followed. Photographs documenting routine carrier landings such as this were essential both for training review and for the historical record of fleet air operations. Project: 218216
