Douglas XTB2D-1 Skypirate Prototype, Left-Hand Front View, 26 February 1945

The Douglas XTB2D-1 'Skypirate,' photographed by the factory on February 26, 1945, was an experimental U.S. Navy torpedo bomber designed to be the largest single-engine carrier aircraft of its time. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engine driving eight-bladed contra-rotating propellers, only two prototypes were built before the program was cancelled after the war, making surviving photographs like this a rare glimpse of a forgotten chapter in naval aviation development.
