This photograph from the Pat McAleer collection shows a small patrol or landing craft converted into an improvised defensive position, its roof reinforced with sandbags and fitted with a machine gun mount. Such makeshift fortifications were common at forward Pacific bases during World War II, where personnel adapted available vessels and materials to guard harbors, lagoons, and beachheads against infiltration or air attack.
