During the 1960s Space Race, NASA needed a way to transport enormous rocket stages across the country to Cape Canaveral. Aero Spacelines answered the challenge by grafting a vastly oversized fuselage onto a Boeing Stratocruiser airframe, creating the 'Guppy' family of cargo aircraft. This photograph shows one of these unusual transports with its hinged nose section swung open, revealing the cavernous cargo hold that made Apollo-era rocket logistics possible. Project: 218190
