In 1942 he trained under the Civilian Pilot Training program at Lone Pine, California, before going on to serve with a B-24 Liberator squadron that, according to the handwritten caption, flew missions against the heavily fortified Japanese base at Truk Atoll -- a strategic anchorage of the Imperial Japanese Combined Fleet subjected to sustained Allied bombing throughout 1944.
