The Snapshots in Time Collection

Gallery: LETTER 1918 01 19

Letters written from the base hospital at Camp Lewis in January 1918, where Pvt. Willis W. Wagener records the death of a fellow soldier from pneumonia and scarlet fever in his ward. Around that loss run the ordinary rhythms of camp life — kitchen duty, doctor's inspections, cribbage, and news of the family ranch back in Ceres, California.
