The Snapshots in Time Collection
Street Scene with Lumber Yard and Gathered Workers, Philippines, Early 1900s
This hand-tinted photograph captures everyday life in the Philippines during the early years of American administration following the Spanish-American War. Filipino laborers gather near stacks of lumber and building materials in what appears to be a public plaza, with a horse-drawn cart and substantial colonial architecture visible in the background. The delicate hand-coloring reflects photographic practices of the early twentieth century, when black-and-white images were often tinted by hand to add lifelike color before the widespread adoption of color film.
