The first honors 1st Lt. Alexander A. Case, an assistant engineering officer cited for his work keeping aircraft flying under the demanding conditions of the Guadalcanal campaign. The second illustrates aerial gunnery training, in which pilots fired ammunition dipped in distinct colors so that hits on a shared canvas target sleeve could be scored individually - a simple but effective method for evaluating marksmanship in squadron training.
