Explosion of the Japanese Battleship Yamato During Operation Ten-Go, April 7, 1945
The catastrophic explosion of the Japanese battleship Yamato, photographed on April 7, 1945, during Operation Ten-Go. After sustained attacks by American carrier aircraft, the detonation of Yamato's forward magazines produced this immense mushroom cloud, visible for miles across the East China Sea, and marked the end of the world's largest battleship and one of the final major naval engagements of World War II.
