Nipa Hut Dwelling near Camp Stotsenburg, Philippines, 1903

Photographed in 1903, this thatched-roof dwelling stood near Camp Stotsenburg in Pampanga province, the U.S. Army post established that year on the site that would later become Clark Field. Built in the traditional Filipino bahay kubo style, elevated on stilts with a steeply pitched nipa or cogon-thatched roof, the structure reflects the vernacular architecture American forces encountered and often adapted for their own use in the years following the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars.
