The Snapshots in Time Collection
Coastal Harbor Town, South China or Formosa Coast, c. 1898-1905
A harbor town along the South China or Formosan coast, photographed around the turn of the twentieth century. Small sampans and fishing junks fill the calm waters before a cluster of tile-roofed buildings set against a rocky hillside. This image is part of a personal photograph collection documenting the Asian port visits of the U.S. Navy's Asiatic Squadron during the years following the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars.
