During shore leave in Japan, sailors from USS Ticonderoga visited the Great Buddha of Kamakura, one of the country's most iconic landmarks and a popular stop for U.S. servicemen on liberty. Cast in bronze in the 13th century, the statue offered a striking backdrop for personal photographs, capturing a lighter side of naval service between combat deployments in the waters off Vietnam.
