U.S. Army Bivouac Area, Burma Campaign, China-Burma-India Theater, WWII

This photograph documents a U.S. Army tent encampment in Burma during World War II, part of the China-Burma-India Theater where Allied forces fought to reopen supply lines to China through some of the world's most difficult jungle terrain. Rows of pyramidal tents like these housed the engineers, quartermaster troops, and airmen who built and defended the Ledo and Burma Roads, enduring monsoon rains, disease, and dense jungle far from the more publicized battles of the European and Pacific theaters.
