Two towering chinthe, the mythical lion-guardians of Burmese Buddhist tradition, stand watch over a stairway in Mandalay. Photographed by Allied personnel during the WWII China-Burma-India campaign, this image reflects the cultural encounters servicemen had with the ancient religious sites of Burma while serving far from home.
